After five consecutive yearlong series drilling deep into San Antonio’s best tacos, barbecue, burgers, pizza and food trucks, we’re putting 2022 between two slices of bread for 52 Weeks of Sandwiches.
Now for the rules, starting with this: Some people consider a burger a sandwich. We’re not those people. Also, no wraps, no hot dogs, no trying to sneak in our favorite foldables on a technicality.
But just about any combination of meat, cheese or veggies wedged between bread, buns, bolillos, bagels and the broader carbohydrate collective is fair game: po’boys, tortas, muffalettas, Italian beef, lobster rolls, French dips, Monte Cristos, cheesesteaks, hot chicken, meatball subs, bagel sandwiches, grilled cheese, PB&J and whatever you call the Serious Sandwich at Zito’s Deli. Each week, we’ll add a new entry to the top.
Gino’s Deli
Best sandwich: Of the 22 sandwiches on the menu, from cold cuts and tuna salad to burgers and hot hoagies, the Philly cheesesteak ($12.49) is by far the bestseller, accounting for 85 to 90 percent of his business, Chaudhry said. The first bite told me why: it’s a cheesy, melty, sweet and beefy stir-fry of lean rib-eye, smoked provolone cheese and grilled onions and peppers finished with lettuce, tomato and grilled jalapeños.
RATING: Solid neighborhood option
