At Gino’s Deli, we’ve always called ourselves the “worst best-kept secret in San Antonio.” For nearly 20 years, we’ve been tucked away in our Huebner Road home, serving up Philly cheesesteaks and deli favorites to the best customers in the world. But it looks like the secret is officially out on a city-wide scale!

We are beyond thrilled to announce that Gino’s Deli has been nominated for the 2026 CultureMap San Antonio Tastemaker Awards in the “Best Sandwich” category by CultureMap San Antonio.

Stacking Up Against the Best

This nomination is a huge honor, especially considering the incredible culinary talent in San Antonio right now. In a recent feature for CultureMap, acclaimed food writer Brandon Watson highlighted how the Alamo City’s deli scene is now rivaling its famous taquerías. Brandon Watson took a deep dive into the 11 nominees, noting that our city now possesses an “international palate” that embraces everything from toasty Cubans to our very own East Coast-style staples.

Recognition for Our “Bad A$$” Traditions

What makes this nomination so special to us is that it recognizes the heart and soul of what we do. Brandon Watson pointed out our long-standing tradition of naming sandwiches after our favorite regulars—like the “Dirty Derrick” or “Rabbi Scott.”

In his write-up, Brandon Watson gave a special shout-out to “Brad’s” creation—a powerhouse mix of smoked turkey, pepperoni, provolone, and egg—calling the combination truly “bad a$.” Whether you’ve been coming here for decades or you’re planning your very first visit, it’s this kind of community-driven spirit that makes Gino’s what it is today.

Come Celebrate With Us!

The Tastemaker Awards aren’t just about a trophy; they are a celebration of the San Antonio dining scene we all love. The winners will be revealed at a signature tasting event at the Briscoe Museum on May 14.

As Brandon Watson mentions in his coverage, a panel of expert judges will be sinking their teeth into the ballots soon, but we already feel like winners just being mentioned alongside such fantastic local businesses.

We want to give a massive “Thank You” to our owner Aleem Chaudhry, our hardworking staff, and most importantly, YOU—our loyal patrons. Without your support over the last three decades, a “convenience store deli” would never be standing on the same stage as the city’s top restaurants.

Stay tuned for more updates, and in the meantime, come by the shop and grab a “Brad” or a classic Philly to celebrate with us!
