Those allegiances are often edible. A fan can easily show who they’re rooting for based solely on what’s grilling on the tailgate. Brats here, skirt steak there. Maybe just burgers and dogs if you want to remain Switzerland in the heat of it all.
While regionalism has largely flattened across the U.S. — social media trends have basically made sure everything is available everywhere — there are still iconic dishes that have a clear home. And when it comes to game day dining, it’s often served between slices of bread.
Sandwich culture is booming in San Antonio, with multiple spots earning national recognition in recent months. And like the teams we root for, those distinct cuisines have found a foothold here. Whether you cheer for the Bills, Chargers, Giants or Patriots (it’s fine to admit it; this is a safe space), you can find a taste of home in the sandwich of your land in San Antonio. Here are eight examples, all worth a taste, regardless of who wins the big game.

Philadelphia: Philly Cheesesteak
Whether you like it “wit” or “wit out” neon yellow processed Cheez Whiz, the Philly cheesesteak ranks among the most well-known regional sandwiches in America, with countless iterations appearing on menus across the land. It’s a sports bar staple nearly everywhere, including San Antonio. But there’s one spot that outshines them all here. Gino’s Deli inside the Stop N Buy corner store has landed on just about every Top This or That list in the country, including a recent spot as No. 9 on Yelp’s list of Top 100 Sandwich Shops in the country, mainly for its array of cheesesteaks made with thinly-sliced rib-eye steak. Forget the Whiz. This place gives you smoked Italian provolone along with the sauteed peppers and onions. Gino’s Deli, 13210 Huebner Road, 210-764-0602, myginosdeli.com.
