Gino’s Deli in San Antonio made Yelp’s first-ever list of the country’s Top 100 Sandwich Shops.
Three San Antonio sandwich shops have landed on Yelp’s first-ever list of the country’s Top 100 Sandwich Shops, including a perennial favorite that made its way to the Top 10.
Gino’s Deli, no stranger to Yelp Top 10 lists, was ranked No. 9. Yelpers praised the former gas station deli and owner Aleem Chaudhry for the shop’s bodega atmosphere and Philly cheesesteaks.
GINO’S DELI: 52 Weeks of Sandwiches
Chaudhry bought Gino’s and the Stop N Buy where it resides from its previous owner in 2006. Over the years, the corner shop has become less and less of a gas station and convenience store — the pumps went away almost 10 years ago — and more of a sandwich destination.
Every sandwich at Gino’s comes with a promise from Chaudhry. “If you don’t like your sandwich, you don’t have to pay for it,” he says.
San Antonio outperformed even Austin, with only one shop on the list. The Olmos Park peanut butter-and-jelly sandwich specialist PB&J with Tay made the list at No. 33, and the Latin-inspired Bilia Eatery in Castle Hills came in at No. 52.
52 S.A. SANDWICHES: A year of sandwiches
Driven by user reviews, Yelp described its methodology for the rankings like this: “We identified businesses in the sandwich category on Yelp, then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including the total volume and ratings of reviews.”
Bilia Eatery in San Antonio made Yelp’s first-ever list of the country’s Top 100 Sandwich Shops.
The list ranked Franky’s Deli Warehouse in Hialeah, Fla., at No. 1. Austin took one spot, with Bird Bird Biscuit at No. 66. In all, 13 Texas shops made the list, including Tony’s Italian Delicatessen in Montgomery at No. 4 and Hugs Cafe in McKinney at No. 7.
For years, we’ve had the honor of serving the San Antonio community, and we’ve always known our sandwiches are something special. Now, it seems the rest of the country is catching on! We are incredibly proud and humbled to announce that Gino’s Deli has been named the 9th best sandwich shop in America by Yelp’s national list of the Top 100 Sandwich Shops.
When Aleem Chaudry started Gino’s Deli inside a humble Stop N Buy convenience store, it was a simple passion project. The goal was to create “absolutely awesome food” and serve it to our wonderful customers—our people. We believe that great food doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive; it just needs to be made with love and the best ingredients.
This new recognition from Yelp is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team, and a huge thank you to all of you who have supported us over the years. Your reviews and loyalty have made this incredible achievement possible.
While we’re famous for our mouthwatering Philly cheesesteak—made with a quarter-pound of ribeye, grilled onions, bell peppers, and two slices of smoked Italian provolone cheese—our menu has something for everyone. From classic deli sandwiches to fresh burgers, every item is crafted with the same commitment to quality that earned us this amazing honor.
We are used to the accolades, but this one is particularly special. It reinforces our mission to make food that people truly love. So, whether you’re a longtime customer or someone discovering us for the first time, we invite you to come and taste why Gino’s Deli is ranked among the best in the nation.
